Why Career Counselling is Important for Students?

“Career Counselling – an eye-opening experience for me” – Pooja Sharma

“I was helpless in school when I reached a point where I had to make a choice between a stream I want and the stream others wanted me to choose. Most of my friends made their choices and happily settled down with their chosen streams, I was confused and upset, my entire career and future was dependent on this single decision, I didn’t want to take any kind of risk. My parents on the other hand were pressurizing me to opt for Science, while I felt humanities is more interesting and has a wide scope, I was constantly wandering to get the right guidance; I was naïve and didn’t know how to convince myself or my parents to take the right decision. I finally decided to go for science, because my parents believed so. During my summer vacations, I read many books and most of them were either novels or were based on crafts, they had nothing to do with science. At that time I had a strong feeling that I have made a wrong choice. Within 4 months of classes at school,  I literally started disliking most of the subjects. I found myself in a mess because I was stuck now and couldn’t tell anyone about it. I decided to speak with my parents and to my surprise they took it sportingly. But my father wanted me to speak to a career counsellor before making any decision. I happily agreed to it, my yearning to speak with someone who would be truly unbiased, rational and understanding towards me, was now going to end and that’s how I met a counsellor at Mer Padhai. “

You must be wondering what happened afterwards, we will continue Pooja’s true story in a while. Most of the people in India either have wrong information about the importance and benefits of career couselling or do not have enough awareness about it.  Career counselling is a mix of scientific, psychological and sociological combination of tools and techniques that help individuals to comprehend and realize their goals and make a better informed choice without being in a state of confusion and uncertainty.  A good career counselor shall deeply examine and study your thoughts and other aspects of your life and experiences.  Only after thoroughly understanding you, he/she will also be spending some time with your closed ones to analyze their thoughts and to encourage them to support you. Their job does not end here; it is entirely their responsibility to guide you all way through.  A career counsellor will be continuously supporting you even after completing your school.

Well, Pooja’s story had a dramatic but happy ending, she realized after meeting a career counsellor that how much she loves crafting, she also turned to be a great writer. The counsellor helped her parents to understand that her inner growth is way more crucial for her future and she can really do well in humanities. Her parents immediately requested her school teachers and principal to change her stream. After passing with good grades, Pooja met her counsellor again and made another right choice. She is currently pursuing English hons. From DU and is planning to go abroad to do a diploma in arts and crafts.
