How to manage time while preparing for an exam

Exams are never fun for me; it always gives panic attacks. Writing this article reminds one of my exam experiences; it was a mathematics exam.  I knew all the questions but was a tad nervous during the exam. My hands trembled and weren’t able to write a single word. However, I scrawled the exam and left the examination hall. Standing outside the examination hall I realize the value of time management while preparing for the exam and during the exam.

Time management always plays an important role in every exam, be it an academic or life exam. You need to manage time at every single step of your life otherwise you can miss the boat.

We all know the golden rule of time management, but the question is how to manage time?

Management of time is needed before and during the examination.

Let us take some time and manage to look into the details of managing time.

Time Management before an exam:

In the world of competition, clearing an exam with flying colors is pouring cold water on something.

The one who masters the art of time management can achieve these with flying colors.

1. Map the actions:   It is the crux of time management; practical planning is all you need. Many of us get excited while planning for the exam and assumes to study all day. Studying all day is not feasible so while planning one should consider all the factors that can consume the time of day and there should be cushions in the time table so that in the case of the emergency study schedule is not affected or hampered.

2. Track the map of actions:  It is the most difficult part of the preparation, but always remember the train out of track is free but it reaches nowhere, likely the being out of time management is free but reaches nowhere. You always need to push yourself to follow the action plan; if you fail to follow the action plan then you are preparing to fail. Keep a check on yourself whether you work accordingly to the action plan.

3. Pencil in your actions: Setting priority is always important; you have confined time to prepare for the exam. Wasting your time on the worthless only increases the pressure of the exam and lately gives a panic attack. It is advised to prioritize your work and day schedule, focus on the work beneficial to accomplish the goals.

4. Discipline:  Managing anything needs discipline. Once you are disciplined in your life and able to set rules and regulations for yourself then only you will be able to manage time. Okay, let me explain this with an example. Set rules and time for self-care, like fix the timings for sleep say 6 hours, don’t grant yourself the extra 5 minutes. If you set an alarm of say 6 a.m, don’t snooze it. Either don’t set an alarm or don’t snooze it. Once you implement discipline in your life you will not find any difficulty in following your action plan.

5. Brush up the action plan:  There is a difference between the planning and execution of the plan. This step is to remove all the errors of the plan and to make it more feasible.  Set short intervals after which you will evaluate your performance and check the feasibility of the plan.

Make sure you are not rigid to your plan, do changes if required to eliminate errors.

6. Follow the new action plan: Reviewing and following the action plan is the vicious cycle and is followed by each other. You need to perform this cycle until your goal is accomplished that is cracking the entrance exam.

During the exam:

Time management while taking an exam is the heart of the performance. If you can manage time efficiently, your hard work is successful otherwise it is in the vain. Let’s look into how to manage time during the exam.
1. The game plan is from easy to hard: Always attempt easy questions first, it gives a sense of confidence and boosts your performance during the exam.
2. Look into questions worth: This seems tricky, how does the worth of the question matters if the candidate needs to attempt all questions? When question paper is lengthy attempting all questions is catch-22.  There worth of questions comes into a role, devoting 10 minutes to a question worth 20 marks is better than devoting it in 10 questions worth 10 marks.
3.  Keep a check on time:  Initially divide your time according to sections and keep a check on time whether you can finish the section at the desired time.
4. Don’t panic: Panic attacks can take time from your precious 3 hours, don’t panic and be calm while taking the exam.  Panic attacks can make you restless and you will not able to solve the questions you know.
5. Prepare for unexpected:  Any mishappening can happen during the exam, take precautions of situations that are in your control. Take extra pens and calculator batteries along you.

Taking exams is fun when time is managed properly and makes the candidate pass exams with flying colors.
