Guide for UGC(NET) and Preparation Tips.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is the statutory body in the conferral to UGC Act 1956, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

It was charged with the coordination, determination, and maintenance of standards of higher education and provides recognition to universities in India and the allocation of funds in such recognized universities and colleges.

 

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is the test taken to determine eligibility for college and university level lectureships and award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals to ensure the minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research; on behalf of UGC, NET is conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for assistant professor only or JRF and eligibility for assistant professor. Initially, CBSE conducted the NET from Dec’18 NTA took over the charge.NTA establish as a premier, specialist, autonomous and self-sustained testing organization to conduct the exam.  Candidates who aspire to become professor or lecturer of a recognized university or college can apply in this exam, qualifying exclusively for an assistant professor who is not considered in JRF. Award of JRF and eligibility for assistant professor depends on the performance of candidates in both papers of NET in aggregate.

Eligibility:

  1. Qualified master’s degree.
  2. Qualifying exam has been delayed or has awaited results can also appear for the exam
  3. The minimum age limit for JRF is 28 years.
  4. No age limit for Assistant professor.

The exam has two papers (Paper1, Paper2)

Paper 1 is generic, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It is designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent, and general awareness.

Paper 2 is based on the subject selected by the candidate.

    • Teaching: aptitude, objectives, characteristics and basic requirements.
    • Learners’ characteristics
    • Factors affecting teaching
    • Teaching Aids
    • Evaluation systems.

 

  1. Research Aptitude:
    • Research- meaning, characteristics, and types; steps of research
    • Methods of research
    • Research Ethics
    • Paper, article, workshop, seminars, conference, and symposium.
    • Thesis writing: Its characteristics and format

 

  1. Reading Comprehension:
    • A passage to be set with questions to be answered.

 

  1. Communication:
    • Communication nature, characteristics, types, barriers and effective classroom communication.

 

  1. Reasoning (Including Mathematics):
    • Number, series, letter series, codes, Relationships, classification.

 

  1. Logical Reasoning:
    • Understanding, the structure of arguments, evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning.
    • Verbal analogies: Word analogy, applied analogy, verbal classification.
    • Reasoning logical diagrams, simple diagrammatic relationship, multi diagrammatic relations.
    • Venn diagrams, analytical reasoning.

 

  1. Data Interpretation:
    • Sources, acquisition, and interpretation of data, graphical representation, and mapping of data.

 

  1. Information and communication technology:
    • ICT: meaning, advantages, disadvantages, and uses.
    • General abbreviations and terminology.
    • Basics of the internet and e-mailing.

 

  1. People and the environment:
    • People and environment interaction; sources of pollution, pollutant and their impact on human life, exploitation of natural and energy resources.
    • Natural Hazards and mitigation.

 

    1. Higher Education system
    • Governance, polity, and administration.

 

 Scope:

This exam is the first step to take towards a career in the field of lectureship and prospects in research.

  1. Eligibility for lectureship – All candidates of Indian nationality who qualify the NET, become eligible to apply for lectureship in all Indian institutes/colleges/universities.

Qualifying UGC NET Exam does not guarantee placement but is more of a requirement to apply for a job in lectureship.

A lecturer’s job description mainly includes imparting theoretical knowledge to their students in the subject/field of their expertise.

    1. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) –  The candidates qualifying the JRF exam of UGC NET also become eligible to undertake lectureship, and besides, they also become eligible to receive fellowships under different schemes. This is subject to the condition that the candidate has found himself a post in IITs, universities or other national-level organizations. This award stays valid for two years from the date of issuance of the award letter.

 

Those who successfully qualify JRF are eligible to-

    • Pursue Research on the subject of their post-graduation or in any related subjects.
    • Join Indian college or university as an assistant professor.
      Other Prospects –  Apart from lectureship, other career prospects for the qualifying candidates are Professor, Assistant Professor, Reader, and Head of Department.

 

Types of Universities Controlled by UGC India:

  1. Central Universities: Universities that are covered under the Central Universities Act, 2009 and controlled by UGC.
  1. State Universities:  State universities are public universities run by the state government of each of the states and territories of India, and are usually established by a local legislative assembly act.
  2.  Deemed Universities:  Deemed University, or deemed-to-be-university, is an accreditation awarded to higher educational institutions in India, conferring the status of a university. It is granted by the Department of Higher Education.
  3. Private Universities:  Private universities are mostly supported by various bodies and societies. Private universities are established by an act of a local legislative assembly and listed by the UGC in the Gazette upon receiving the act.
